How to Test Your Microphone on Windows 11 and Mac

You are about to join a meeting, start a stream or record something, and you realise you have no idea if your microphone works. Nobody wants to find out halfway through.

The good news is that testing a mic takes about a minute, and you don鈥檛 need to install anything. Below are the quickest ways to do it in a browser, on Windows 11 and on a Mac. Pick whichever one suits you. If your mic turns out to be silent, there鈥檚 a short fix list at the end.

The quickest way: test it in your browser

This works on any computer, whatever the operating system, so it鈥檚 the one to try first.

  1. Open our free microphone test.
  2. Click Start.
  3. When your browser asks to use the microphone, click Allow.
  4. Say a few words and watch the line.

If the line moves while you talk, your mic is working. If it stays flat, move on to the Windows or Mac steps below, because that usually means the problem sits in your system settings.

Everything runs inside your browser. The test doesn鈥檛 upload your voice anywhere.

How to test your microphone on Windows 11

Windows has two good built-in options. The first checks the level live, and the second lets you record yourself and listen back.

Option 1: Check the level in Sound settings

  1. Click the Start button and open Settings.
  2. Go to System, then Sound.
  3. Scroll to the Input section. You鈥檒l see your microphones listed there.
  4. Click the one you want to use.
  5. Speak normally and look at the test bar. Depending on your version of Windows, you鈥檒l either see a bar that moves as you talk or a Start test button that gives you a result as a percentage.

If the bar barely moves, drag the input volume slider up and try again. If it doesn鈥檛 move at all, you鈥檙e probably looking at the wrong device, so click a different one in the list.

A few tips for a cleaner test

Test in the room where you鈥檒l actually be using the mic, because the noise around you changes the result. Keep a headset mic about two fingers from the corner of your mouth, and a desk mic about a hand鈥檚 width away. Wear headphones while you play recordings back, otherwise your speakers can feed back into the mic and give you a false echo.

Quick answers

Is an online mic test safe? It depends on the site, so check what it says about privacy. Ours runs entirely in your browser and doesn鈥檛 upload your audio. Your browser will always ask before it lets any site use your microphone, and you can say no.

Why is my mic so quiet? Raise the input volume in your sound settings, move closer to the mic, and check that the right device is selected. Some apps also have an automatic volume setting that can turn things down, so turn that off if you can.

Can I test my microphone without headphones? Yes. Just be careful when you play recordings back through speakers, because the sound can loop into the mic and cause an echo or a squeal. Headphones avoid the problem.

Does the same test work for a USB mic and a headset? Yes. Pick the device you want in the list, then follow the same steps. If it鈥檚 a new USB mic, unplug it and plug it in again if it doesn鈥檛 show up.
