Low bars are the room
The spectrum on the microphone test is a live picture of the frequencies the browser can hear. A bump at the left is rumble from a fan or a desk. It is drawn from samples in this tab and discarded when you leave.
A flat line is silence or the wrong input
If every bar stays down while you talk, the selected device is muted, or the browser is listening to a different microphone. Change the input on the test page, then try again. Nothing you say is uploaded.
